POST - PROCEDURE :

 
  1. You should plan to go home and rest for the remainder of the day. You will be given medications that will temporarily impair your judgment and reflexes. Therefore, for the next twenty-four (24) hours, you should not :

  2. • Drive a car, operate machinery or operate power tools.
    • Drink any alcoholic beverages, take tranquilizers, or sleeping pills.
    • Make critical decisions such as signing legal documents.

  3. If your physician has given you a prescription, it should be filled at a pharmacy and then taken as directed. You may resume any other medications you have unless advised not to by your doctor.

  4. You may resume your usual diet as tolerated when alert, unless otherwise directed.

  5. For your safety and protection, it is required to have a responsible caregiver with you after your procedure.

  6. At time of your discharge, you and your responsible caregiver will be given instructions specific to your specific procedure and physician.

  7. Sometimes the medications used may cause soreness at the IV site. To relieve discomfort we suggest using ice packs for bruising and moist heat three times a day for soreness without bruising. If no improvement is seen in 2 days call your physician.

  8. If you experience any of the following symptoms call your physician or come to the Emergency Room:

    • excessive nausea or vomiting
    • temperature elevation over 101°F
    • excessive chest pain
    • vomiting blood
    • black or tarry stools
    • excessive abdominal pain
    • if you see more than a few teaspoons of bright red blood

  9. Occasionally following the Esophagogastroduodenoscopy your throat may feel a little sore. We suggest gargling two or three times a day with a little warm salt water.

  10. Call your physician's office if he has not called you regarding your biopsy results in seven (7) to ten (10) working days.
